AltSchool Africa, a leading edtech platform focused on equipping Africans with digital skills, has launched an ambitious initiative, ‘AI for 10M Africans’ to provide free artificial intelligence education to 10 million people across the continent.
The program, launched at a press conference in Lagos, seeks to demystify AI, correct misconceptions, and empower Africans with the knowledge needed to integrate AI into their careers and everyday lives.
AI Is No Longer the Future
Speaking at the event, Adewale Yusuf, CEO and Co-founder of AltSchool Africa, emphasized the urgency of AI education in Africa.
“The future belongs to those who are prepared. AI is no longer a technology of the future; it is shaping industries, economies, and everyday life today,” he said.
He further highlighted the program’s mission, stating:
“With this initiative, we are taking a bold step to ensure that Africans are not left behind. The initiative is more than an educational programme; it is a movement to create opportunities and bridge the knowledge gap.”
Breaking Down AI for Every Learner
The AI for 10M Africans initiative is structured to cater to individuals at all levels of expertise, from beginners to professionals. The curriculum starts with fundamental AI concepts and progresses to specialized topics, including machine learning, data science, AI engineering, and real-world applications.
According to Foluso Folorunso, Project Lead for the initiative, the goal is to make AI knowledge accessible and engaging.
“Many people in Africa still see AI as something distant or even intimidating. Our goal is to change that.”
She further explained:
“This initiative provides structured, accessible, and engaging learning experiences that will help Africans understand AI, leverage it for personal and professional growth, and even build AI-powered solutions. Our long-term vision is to create a thriving AI ecosystem in Africa.”

A Structured Learning Path
AltSchool Africa has designed a comprehensive learning pathway that ensures learners progress from basic AI awareness to hands-on application. The program includes:
- Multilingual Course Content – Available in English, French, Swahili, Arabic, and more to accommodate Africa’s diverse linguistic landscape.
- Real-World Projects – Practical applications to reinforce AI skills.

The initiative is set to expand beyond West Africa, with a strong focus on East Africa. Christine Ashimwe, Business Developer for East Africa, stressed the importance of ensuring youths across the region have access to AI opportunities.
“AI is not the future; AI is the present. It is already shaping how we work and live, and its impact will only grow.”
She continued:
“In East Africa, where 146 million young people are looking for opportunities, we must equip them to leverage AI, not fear it. The next wave of African innovation will be powered by AI, and our mission is to ensure that our youths are not just spectators but leaders in this transformation.”

To successfully reach 10 million Africans, AltSchool Africa is seeking support from organizations, governments, and industry leaders.
