Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai met with Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu in Paris to discuss expanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills and digital transformation in Nigeria. The meeting, which included Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, focused on how Google can support Nigeria’s AI development and innovation efforts.

Pichai shared a picture of the meeting on X, highlighting discussions about AI’s potential in Nigeria. Minister Tijani described the engagement as “extremely productive,” reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to AI-driven economic growth.

Google’s AI Initiatives in Nigeria

Google has already launched several AI-focused initiatives in Nigeria, aiming to equip young Nigerians with digital skills and support AI-powered startups:

  • N100 million AI Fund: Google partnered with the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) to support Nigerian startups developing AI solutions.
  • N2.8 billion AI Talent Development Grant: Google.org funded Data Science Nigeria to train underemployed youth and boost AI-driven education.

These investments align with the Federal Government’s AI strategy, which aims to position Nigeria as Africa’s AI leader.

Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and Digital Vision

The Nigerian government recently released the National AI Strategy document, which is under review by relevant ministries and agencies. Once finalized, it will serve as a policy framework to guide AI-related initiatives across the country.

To ensure an inclusive approach to AI development, the government has also launched the AI Collective, which will collaborate on:

  • Research and innovation projects
  • Hackathons and AI-driven events
  • Public-private partnerships to advance AI solutions

Another major milestone is the development of Nigeria’s Large Language Model (LLM), which is being trained in five low-resource languages and accented English. This initiative aims to increase linguistic representation and enhance AI-powered solutions for diverse Nigerian communities.

Google and Nigeria’s Shared Vision for Digital Growth

During the meeting, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s AI and digital transformation efforts, stating:

“Nigeria has an incredible opportunity to lead in AI and digital innovation in Africa. Google is excited to continue working with the Nigerian government to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation and economic growth.”

Google’s involvement in expanding digital infrastructure, AI research, and cloud adoption aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes technology, industrialization, and economic diversification.

President Tinubu acknowledged Nigeria’s potential as a global technology hub, emphasizing that his administration is dedicated to creating a business-friendly environment that attracts leading global tech companies.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, also highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating that the partnership between Nigeria and Google represents an important opportunity to accelerate Nigeria’s technological advancement and strengthen our digital economy. He further said Nigeria is committed to ensuring that AI and digital transformation create tangible benefits for businesses and citizens across the country.

Nigeria’s AI Future: What Comes Next?

As discussions between Google and the Nigerian government continue, both parties are expected to:

  • Expand AI talent development programs to train the next generation of Nigerian innovators.
  • Improve internet accessibility and cloud computing adoption to support businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • Develop new AI-driven solutions tailored to Nigeria’s economic and social needs.

By deepening this strategic collaboration, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in AI, digital innovation, and economic transformation in Africa.
